Weekend Smiles - The laws of golf!

LAW #1 - No matter how bad your last show was, the worst is yet to come.  This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eveuntually, a lifetime.
LAW #2 - Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever.  The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about he former.
LAW #3 - Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic.  Though this cannot be proven in a lab, it is a known fact tht the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water.
LAW #4 - Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play.  If one does, the tree is breaking the law and should be cut down.
LAW#5 - No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "you looked up" or invoke the wrath of the universe.
LAW #6 - The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified she/he deems themselves as an instructor.
LAW #7 - Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers.  The shorter the hole, the greater the desire.
LAW #8 - Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture know to man kind.
LAW #9 - Palm trees eat golf balls.
LAW #10 - Sand is alive.  If it is not, how do you explain the way it works against you?
LAW#11 - Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse.
LAW#12 - A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group.  Likewise, a group you accidently hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent - or some similar combination.
LAW#13 - All 3-woods are demon-possessed.
LAW#14 - Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into water (see Law #3).
LAW#15 - A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty.
LAW#16 - "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt".  Similarly "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one".
LAW #17 - The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you.
LAW#18 - The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.
LAW#19 - Golf should be given up at least twice per month.
LAW#20 - All vows taken on the golf course shall only be valid until sunset.

August News!

I apologize for not keeping up with the blogs.  I am unsure if anyone reads them!

First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the women golfers who participated in the Club Championships this past weekend.  Congrats to the winners of the flight divisions and Congrats to the contenders!  You had beautiful weather for the most part!

There are three more league nights for the women's section. I strongly urge you to come out and count for your team!  The Women's Committee is working now on the Closing Event, which will be much like last year's event, but with Darren's help, hopefully without complaints and/or injuries to those coming up 18 fairway on to the green!

The Women's Committee is looking for new members to join!  If you are interested in helping out with this committee, please see either Sandra Shank, Kim Moir, Barb Ivak, Jackie Mote, Cathy Thompson or myself, Diane Harris.  We would like to see some sub-committees formed as well, which will help out for different events.  That way, we would begin to build different groups of women, which will offer more ideas and changes to the women's section.

Change is always hard, but it ends up being the most refreshing thing that can be done.  The one thing in my life that I could always count on was "change".  It keeps you young and keeps you thinking!!

The women's committee will be meeting within the next two weeks to discuss the upcoming events, as well as the closing events.  Although we are only in the early part of August, we must start to prepare for the fall!

Please think about joining the Women's Committee - whether it be on the actual committee or a sub-committee.  We need your ideas and we need your energy!

Enjoy the rest of August!! - It seems to be going  a bit fast for my liking!!

See you on the course!

Diane.

A funny from Jackie Mote

Jackie has asked me share with you a funny story...... so here it is!
During her physical examination, a doctor asked a middle-aged an older woman  about her physical activity level. The woman said she spent 3 days a week, every week in the outdoors.

"Well, yesterday afternoon was typical; I took a five hour walk about 7 miles through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through 2 miles of brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I went to the bathroom behind some big trees. I ran away from an irate mother bear and then ran away from one angry bull Elk. The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all I drank a scotch and three glasses of wine.

Amazed by the story, the doctor said, "You must be one hell of an outdoor woman!"
"No," the woman replied, "I'm just a really, really shitty golfer".

Teams have been Selected for Women's League

Hi!

All the teams were randomly picked last Tuesday evening for the upcoming Women's League which begins on May 28th.

A reminder to any woman who has not yet signed up and wants to.....you still can!  We have open spots on some of the teams so please do and have some fun.

There are currently 6 teams - team names are being thought of as we speak.  I will be posting the names and members of the teams next week when we have all the information.

I signed up as Captain again this year.  My team consists of Cathy Poole; Cheryl Irwin, Donna Stalker, Jean Shippey, Joanne Martin, Joanne Vleuten, Mame Gooding, Trish Wilkins and Yvette Voegelin.  Now that sounds like a great team!   I am sure that we will  all have a great time on the golf course and also off the golf course!  I look forward to playing with each member of the team this year, so watch out, I will be plugging my name on your time slot some day soon!

It is Friday, before the long May weekeknd!  I hope everyone  has a great one.  May it be safe, and full of laughter and of course, sunshine!

Till next week!

Diane.

Great Weather for Golfing

Hi Everyone!

This past Tuesday was my first "real" round of the season.  The weather was great, and of course the company was even better.  It was great to see so many women out!

A quick reminder to sign up for League play and the Birdies/Eagles/Putts.  The committee needs to put the teams together by a random pick on May 15th.  So get your name in - we don't want to miss anyone.

I also signed up to play in the club's Opening Sunday Round on May 5th.  Another great weather day.  I had the pleasure of golfing with Nora Spence and Hannah Masters.  One of the things I enjoy most when playing in tournaments is meeting new people.  We had a great time and some challenging fun shots.  I think our team ended up with an 85, far off the lead, but we came in first in the enjoyment category!   As we were playing a scramble format, one of our shots landed (lodged)  in the left bunker on 5. Our other two balls were back a ways, in the middle of the fairway  We all looked at each other and decided on the spot to live on the "wild side" and take the challenging shot.  Our Nora hit it out beautifully and the ball landed within a foot of the pin.

The moral of that story (and there always is one) is don't always choose the easy shot in life....it is more fun to challenge yourself!  You may even end up in a much better position then you ever thought possible.

I look forward to golfing with you!  See you soon,
Diane.

Women's Tuesday League Play!!

Hello Everyone! - if you haven't already done so, please sign up for our Tuesday League play! We need you to sign up by May 14th as that is the night we are picking teams.  The season begins Tuesday, May 28th.  Prize money to be won each week - closest to pin, longest putt. The committee has added a new game this season with a hidden hole.  Whoever scores the highest on this hole will win a nice prize!

To make it more fun we are adding a hole-in-one contest each week - $1.00 of the weekly fee goes into this pot.  At the end of the season, whoever scored a hole-in-one will share the money accumulated.  If no one is lucky enough to get a hole-in-one then the money will be used at the end of the season for prizes and/or the bbq at the roundup.

We look forward to playing with you!

Barb Ivak

Sunday 28 April 2013

Congratulations to Jan Plumstead who shot a hole-in-one on Saturday, April 27.  This is her first hole-in-one!  Way to go Jan!!

This is the first one of the season for our women's section.  I am sure there will be lots more to come. Great Golfing!

Thursday 25 April 2013

Here is some of the pictures Kim took of the food at Tuesday's opening!  Nice Work!

We had about 45-50 women golfers come out to Tuesday's Opening Evening.  It was a fun night.  I want to say Congrats to Marg Brooks who won the 50/50 draw.   When Marg purchased her ticket, she simply stated "I don't know why I buy these, I never win." - I leaned over to her and told her to change her thought and put it "out there" that tonight she was going to win!  She stated "Ok, today I am going to win!" - And she did!

Same with golf!  Put that thought out there that you are going to have a great golf season!  It could be a thought to lower your score, or simply that you are going to make 2013 a fun social golf season!  If you do the latter, you will be surprised that your score comes down anyway because we are no longer stressing about it!

Sandra sent a mass email out yesterday to tell all who were unable to make it Tuesday about the information shared.  Here is another re-cap:

Tuesday Night League:  Starting a week earlier this year - May 28 and ending one week later.  This will take care of the two Tuesday cancellations - one for the Invitational and one for the day after the Club C's.
As of Tuesday, we had only 27 people sign up.  Please try to get into the Proshop soon to sign up before May 14th.   We are looking for Team Captains!  See Darren in the pro-shop and he can tell you all the details.

We have increased the league fee's this year to $5/week.  $4 for the league and $1 for a hole-in-one fund.  The fund will be a split up at the end of the league play.  If it is not won, it will be applied to the year end closing in ways of bbq costs and/or prizes.

To make the league a bit more fun, each week we plan to have a hidden hole.  This hole will be randomly chosen by the proshop.  The worst score will be the winning the prize. This prize will be given out weekly, so check with the proshop to see if you won.

Cathy Thomson will be looking after the birdies/puttsagain this year.  See Darren if you need to have this explained in detail.

Member/Guest Day - Sunday, June 9th:  We have moved the date back a week, as the Zonta Golf Classic has been scheduled for June 2.  Last year you may recall that they followed each other from Sunday to Monday, which meant both tournaments were not fully attended.

The Member/Guest day is a great way to bring out friends, co-workers, sisters, daughters, neices, neighbours, aunts and mothers!!  This is a non-competitve event, a day of fun and bonding.  The cost is $35 for a member and $55 for your guest.  Thank you Judy VandeCappelle of Brantform Tech for your sponsorship again this year!

Members of the Women's Committee modelled the new women's wear from the pro-shop Tuesday.  Take a look of some of the new items if you are looking to expand your wardrobe.  Ask Darren about the golf shoes I modelled.  I could not get over how light they were.  They would make a huge difference to your stride on those hotter, steamy July days!

Anyway, I will try and keep this blog updated.  Please feel free to add  a post and/or a picture.  We really want to keep this an interactive blog, which informs and motivates women at Caigowan!

See you all soon - the weather this weekend looks like it will be cooperative - so get your gear on and enjoy the course!

Diane.

Monday 22 April 2013

Hello!  I think I have the start of a great blog!  Thanks Sandra for giving me the start-up training time.  This blog is for everyone - so post when you can - and add pictures of the course and great shots.

I will be posting all the upcoming events to this page so that women are aware of what is happening and when at Craigowan.  This blog has been started as a way to help connect all women golfers to what is happening at the course, and hopefully connect you to other people.  We want to help make golfing at Craigowan a fun and social time.

There is a lot of fun tournaments planned this year and I want to encourage you to join in.   Higher handicaps can be beneficial to a tournament, so don't be afraid to sign up.   We know our game will improve with time and practice.  Be patient with yourself!

Some of the events coming up in the near future is the Men and Women's Opening Field Day, scheduled for Sunday May 5. The women's league begins Tuesday, May 28th, followed by the Women's Member-Guest Tournament on Sunday, June 9.

There is a binder in the pro-shop to sign up for these and more events.  I am going to challenge you to sign up for tournaments you were in before, and some that you may not have tried.

Remember, golf is merely a game - and if a high score is the worst thing that can happen to you - then you have a pretty good life!  No one ever remembers your score anyway!

So come out, have fun!   No worries and be happy!

See you out on the course!

Diane.
Welcome to Craigowan Women's Golf Blog.

We are hoping to make this an inter-active blog so that all women can post their pictures, and thoughts throughout the golf year.

We will tell you more at the Opening Golf Evening April 23!

Hope to see you there.
